FOUR CONTESTANTS, THREE SISTERS, TWO SONGS, ONE (euro) VISION
Lena is the talk of the German expatriot community.
She is a 19 year old German, who, this past weekend, won the annual Eurovision Song contest singing the pop song "Satellite".
"Evvryvone is talking about zthees Lena. Do you know her? Have you heard of this contest? In Germany, we are not so, how do you say, uh, spontaneous, you know, so zthis is zvery, zvery, important. It is a big deal for us."
Well, I knew the contest, but not "zthees Lena". I was anxious to look her up.

And here's what the local German papers are saying about her, and her victory:
"National identity has lost its ... threatening component, it can now be articulated in a more stressless manner," said Tilman Allert, a professor at the University of Frankfurt. "For a long time, the display of a national identity was accompanied by shame in Germany. Maybe other countries will now say: You don't have to fear Germany any longer."
